Poon Leung at the IMT Tae Kwon Do Camp

This year’s Tae Kwon Do camp our special guest is our very own Poon Leung. Sometimes we have to look whats behind our own doors for inspiration!

More about Poon Leung

I had always been curious about martial arts as a child, but wasn’t until 2012 when I began my journey at Macquarie University. This was my year away from study, and I was looking to do something new. A part of that meant taking up a whole bunch of different things the gym offered. I ended up sticking with Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. While all three are good exercise and are definitely something I would recommend and have become part of my identity, BJJ definitely takes the lead (not that there is a competition). It’s just such a beautiful and intricate system of movements and there is always something completely new to learn. I have competed three times so far at local competitions, winning gold once and silver once (losing on points and not by submission). I enjoy teaching BJJ as much as I enjoy practicing it. It helps those in the class to learn faster and also tests my understanding of the move. I’ve even on occasion began explaining a move (correctly), then found my body was doing the wrong thing, and so it helps me correct my own technique. As at September 2016, I am a black tip in Tae Kwon Do, a second stripe blue belt in BJJ and a blue shirt in Muay Thai
