I started training at a WTF club during high school in 1997. Initially I fell into it because quite a few of my friends had recently started and I, like many kids, though martial arts was cool. I loved the training and achieved my 1st Dan before moving towns for University.
I took a break from training while doing University. After relocating to Sydney in 2006 I found an IMT club only a couple of blocks away. I was hooked after the first class!
Back at my original club I trained Hapkido for 6 months. I have dabbled in Escrima and recently started S.P.E.A.R.
I’ve been training in Tae Kwon Do for half my life, so it is difficult to guess who I would be without it.
As a teenager it helped immensely with figuring out who I am and giving me an outlet. As an adult it’s been hugely beneficial to relieve stress and aide mental health. It sounds strange to someone that has not done it, but a good, tiring training session is my version of meditation.
My main reason for training is that I love teaching my body new skills. There are others that I have done (paintball, snow boarding, archery, Tough Mudder, western sword, parkour) and will do again, but martial arts is something that I find consistently enjoyable and rewarding. I think a large part of that has to do with the people that are attracted to IMT: no ego and eager to learn.
